Introduction
GlycophorinsA&B(GYPA&GYPB)arethemainsialoglycoproteinsofthehumanerythrocytemembranewhichcarrytheantigenicdeterminantsfortheMNandSsbloodgroups.AlongwiththeMorNandSorsantigenswhichnormallyoccurinallpopulations,approximately40relatedvariantphenotypeswereidentified.ThesevariantscompriseallthevariantsoftheMiltenbergercomplexandsomeisoformsofSta,aswellasDantu,Sat,He,Mg,anddeletionvariantsEna,S-s-U-andMk.GYPAissignificantforthefunctionofSLC4A1andisnecessaryforhighactivityofSLC4A1.GYPAisinvolvedintranslocationofSLC4A1totheplasmamembrane.GYPAisalsoareceptorfor:theinfluenzavirus,Plasmodiumfalciparumerythrocyte-bindingantigen175(EBA-175);bindingofEBA-175isdependentonsialicacidresiduesoftheO-linkedglycansandisalsoareceptorforHepatitisAvirus(HAV).
