Introduction

Carcinoembryonicantigen(CEA)isaglycoproteinpresentinfetaldigestive-tracttissues;it’sinvolvedincelladhesion.TheproductionofCEAstopsbeforebirth.CEAiscalledtumorMarkersinceitselevatedlevelsarefoundintheserumfromindividualswithcolorectal,gastric,pancreatic,lungandbreastcarcinomasandinheavysmokers.
TherearealsobenignconditionsthatelevateCEAlevelssuchassmoking,infection,inflammatoryboweldisease,pancreatitis,cirrhosisoftheliver,andsomebenigntumors(intheequivalentorganswhichhavecancerswithelevatedCEA).Typically,higherlevelsofCEAarefoundinmen,smokers,andolderindividuals.
ThepresenceofCEAassistsinscreening,inevaluatingrecurrentordisseminateddisease,andindeterminingthesuccessofsurgicalremovalofmalignanttumors.
CEAlevelscanbeusedasindicatorsoftreatmentsuccess.Thenormalvaluesrangefrom0.0to2.5ng/mlofserum(fromblood),innon-smokers,agreateramountthanthatmaybesuggestiveofcancer.Levelsabove20ng/mlbeforetreatmentareassociatedwithcancerwhichhasalreadymetastasized.BenignconditionsdonotusuallycauseaCEAincreaseover10ng/ml.
ThehighlevelsofCEAshouldreturntonormalaftersuccessfultherapy,howeverifduringfollowupthere’sanelevationinCEAlevelsitindicatesarecurrenceoftumor.
Carcinoembryonicantigenfamilybelongstotheimmunoglobulinsuperfamily;itconsistsof29genes,18ofwhicharenormallyexpressed.
