TSHBisahormonesynthesizedandsecretedbythyrotropecellsintheanteriorpituitaryglandwhichregulatestheendocrinefunctionoftheTgland.TSHstimulatestheglandtosecretethehormonesthyroxine(T4)andtriiodothyronine(T3).TSHproductioniscontrolledbyaThyrotropinReleasingHormone,(TRH),whichismanufacturedinthehypothalamusandtransportedtotheAnteriorPituitarygland,whereitincreasesTSHproductionandrelease.Somatostatinisalsoproducedbythehypothalamus,andhasanoppositeeffectonthepituitaryproductionofTSH,decreasingorinhibitingitsrelease.ThelevelofT hormones(T3andT4)inthebloodhaveanadditionaleffectonthepituitaryreleaseofTSH,WhenthelevelsofT3andT4arelow,theproductionofTSHisincreased,andconversely,whenlevelsofT3andT4arehigh,thenTSHproductionisdecreased.Thiseffectcreatesaregulatorynegativefeedbackloop.TSHisaglycoproteinandconsistsoftwosubunits,thealphaandthebetasubunit.Thea(alpha)subunitisidenticaltothatofhumanchorionicgonadotropin(HCG),luteinisinghormone(LH),follicle-stimulatinghormone(FSH).Theb(beta)subunitisuniquetoTSH,andthereforedeterminesitsfunction.
