BCA-1isaCXCchemokinethatishighlyexpressedinthesecondarylymphoidorgans,suchasfolliclesofthespleen,lymphnodes,andPeyer"spatches.CXCL13promotesthemigrationofBlymphocytes(comparedtoTcellsandmacrophages),bystimulatingcalciuminfluxinto,andchemotaxisof,cellsexpressingBurkitt"slymphomareceptor1(BLR1).BCA1thereforefunctioninthehomingofBlymphocytestofollicles.HumanBCA-1sharesa64%aminoacidsequencesimilaritywiththemouseproteinand23-34%aminoacidsequenceidentitywithotherknownCXCchemokines.RecombinantorchemicallysynthesizedBCA1isapotentchemoattractantforBlymphocytesbutnotTlymphocytes,monocytesorneutrophils.BLR1,aGprotein-coupledreceptororiginallyisolatedfromBurkitt’slymphomacells,hasnowbeenshowntobethespecificreceptorforBCA1.Amongcellsofthehematopoieticlineages,theexpressionofBLR-1,nowdesignatedCXCR-5,isrestrictedtoBlymphocytesandasubpopulationofThelpermemorycells.
