Introduction
Vascularendothelialgrowthfactorisanimportantsignalingproteininvolvedinbothangiogenesisandvasculogenesis.VEGFactivityhasbeenmostlystudiedoncellsofthevascularendothelium,althoughitdoeshaveeffectsonanumberofothercelltypes(e.g.stimulationmonocyte/macrophagemigration,neurons,cancercells,kidneyepithelialcells).VEGFmediatesincreasedvascularpermeability,inducesangiogenesis,vasculogenesisandendothelialcellgrowth,promotescellmigration,andinhibitsapoptosis.Invitro,VEGFhasbeenshowntostimulateendothelialcellmitogenesisandcellmigration.VEGFisalsoavasodilatorandincreasesmicrovascularpermeabilityandwasoriginallyreferredtoasvascularpermeabilityfactor.ElevatedlevelsofVEGFislinkedtoPOEMSsyndrome,alsoknownasCrow-Fukasesyndrome.MutationsinVEGFhavebeenassociatedwithproliferativeandnonproliferativediabeticretinopathy.
