Introduction
FGF-basicisamemberofthefibroblastgrowthfactor(FGF)family.FGFfamilymembersbindheparinandpossessbroadmitogenicandangiogenicactivities.ThisproteinhasbeenimplicatedindiverseBIOLOGicalprocesses,suchaslimbandnervoussystemdevelopment,woundhealing,andtumorgrowth.ThemRNAforthisgenecontainsmultiplepolyadenylationsites,andisalternativelytranslatedfromAUGandnon-AUG(CUG)initiationcodonsresultingin5differentisoformswithdistinctproperties.TheCUG-initiatedisoformsarelocalizedinthenucleusandareresponsIBLefortheintracrineeffect,whereas,theAUG-initiatedformismostlycytosolicandisresponsiblefortheparacrineandautocrineeffectsofthisFGF.Theheparin-bindinggrowthfactorsareangiogenicagentsinvivoandarepotentmitogensforavarietyofcelltypesinvitro.therearedifferencesinthetissuedistributionandconcentrationofthese2growthfactors.
