Introduction

Acidicfibroblastgrowthfactorisamemberofthefibroblastgrowthfactor(FGF)family.FGFfamilymemberspossessbroadmitogenicandcellsurvivalactivities,andareinvolvedinavarietyofBIOLOGicalprocesses,includingembryonicdevelopment,cellgrowth,morphogenesis,tissuerepair,tumorgrowthandinvasion.FGF1functionsasamodifierofendothelialcellmigrationandproliferation,aswellasanangiogenicfactor.FGF1actsasamitogenforavarietyofmesoderm-andneuroectoderm-derivedcellsinvitro,thusisthoughttobeinvolvedinorganogenesis.Threealternativelysplicedvariantsencodingdifferentisoformshavebeendescribed.Thebindinggrowthfactorsareangiogenicagentsinvivoandarepotentmitogensforavarietyofcelltypesinvitro.Therearedifferencesinthetissuedistributionandconcentrationofthese2growthfactors.
