Introduction
Resistin,aproductoftheRSTNgene,isapeptidehormonebelongingtotheclassofcysteine-richsecretedproteinswhichistermedtheRELMfamily,andisalsodescribedasADSF(AdiposeTissue-SpecificSecretoryFactor)andFIZZ3(FoundinInflammatoryZone).Humanresistincontains108aminoacidsasaprepeptide,anditshydrofobicsignalpeptideiscleavedbeforeitssecretion.Resistincirculatesinhumanbloodasadimericproteinconsistingoftwo92aminoacidpolypeptides,whicharedisulfide-linkedviaCys26.Mouseresistin,specificallyproducedandsecretedbyadipocyte,actsonskeletalmusclemyocytes,hepatocytesandadipocytesthemselvessothatitreducestheirsensitivity.Steppanetal.havesuggestedthatresistinsuppressestheABIlitytostimulateglucoseuptake.Theyhavealsosuggestedthatresistinispresentatelevatedlevelsinbloodofobesemice,andisdownregulatedbyfastingandantidiabeticdrugs.Wayetal.,ontheotherhand,havefoundthatresistinexpressionisseverlysuppressedinobesityandisstimulatedbyseveralantidiabeticdrugs.Otherstudieshaveshownthatmouseresistinincreasesduringthedifferentiationofadipocytes,butitalsoseemstoinhibitAdipogenesis.Incontrast,thehumanadipogenicdifferentiationislikelytobeassociatedwithadownregulationofresistingeneexpression.
