Introduction
IFN-tauisalsoknownasTP-1(trophoblastprotein-1)isanewclassoftypeIIFNthatissecretedbythetrophoblastandisthesignalformaternalrecognitionofpregnancyinsheep.IFN-tauhaspotentimmunosuppressiveandantiviralactivitiessimilartoothertypeIIFNbutislesscytotoxicthanIFN-alphaandIFN-beta.ThecurrentinvestigationconcernstheeffectofrecombinantovineIFN-tau(rOIFN-tau)onthemodulationofMHCclassIandIIexpressiononclonedmousecerebrovascularendothelial(CVE)cells.IFN-tauinducedtyrosinephosphorylationofStat1andupregulatedtheexpressionofMHCclassIonCVE.OneproposedactionbywhichtypeIIFNreducestherelapserateinMSisviainterferencewithIFN-?-inducedMHCclassIIexpression.IFN-tauwasshowntodownregulateIFN-?-inducedMHCclassIIexpressiononCVEand,hence,maybeofpotentialtherapeuticvalueindownregulatinginflammationinthecentralnervoussystem(CNS).IFN-taudidnotupregulatetheexpressionofMHCclassIIonCVE.IFN-taualsoinhibitedthereplicationofTheiler"svirusinCVE.
