Introduction

Lipopolysaccharides(LPS)areatypeofglycolipidsontheoutercellwallofGram-negativebacteria.Lipopolysaccharidebindingprotein(akaLBP)isaplasmaproteinwhichfacilitatesthediffusionofbacterialLPS(endotoxin).LBPisinvolvedintheacute-phaseimmunologicresponsetogram-negativebacterialinfections.IncooperationwithbactericidalpermeABIlity-increasingprotein(BPI),LBPbindsLPSandinteractswiththeCD14receptor,mostlikelyplayingaroleinregulatingLPS-dependentmonocyteresponses.LBPbelongstoafamilyofstructurallyandfunctionallyrelatedproteins,includingBPI,plasmacholesterylestertransferprotein(CETP),andphospholipidtransferprotein(PLTP).TheLBPgeneisfoundonchromosome20,directlydownstreamoftheBPIgene.LBPcatalyzesthetransferofLPSmonomersfromLPSaggregatestoHDLparticles,tophospholipidbilayers,andtoabindingsiteonsolubleCD14(sCD14).sCD14iscapableofspeedingupthetransferbyreceivinganLPSmonomerfromanLPSaggregate,andthenyieldingittoanHDLparticle,thereforeactingasasoluble"shuttle"foraninsolublelipid.
