Introduction
CD1aisatransmembraneglycoproteins,whichisstructurallyrelatedtothemajorhistocompatibilitycomplex(MHC)proteinsandformheterodimerswithbeta-2-microglobulin.CD1amediatesthepresentationofprimarilylipidandglycolipidantigensofselformicrobialorigintoTcells.ThehumangenomecontainsfiveCD1familygenesorganizedinaclusteronchromosome1.TheCD1familymembersarethoughttodifferintheircellularlocalizationandspecificityforparticularlipidligands.Theproteinencodedbythisgenelocalizestotheplasmamembraneandtorecyclingvesiclesoftheearlyendocyticsystem.Alternativelysplicedtranscriptvariantshavebeenobserved,buttheirBIOLOGicalvalidityhasnotbeendetermined.
