Introduction
Resistin,aproductoftheRSTNgene,isapeptidehormonebelongingtotheclassofcysteine-richsecretedproteins(monomericpeptidecontains11cysteineresidues)referredtoastheRELMfamily,andisalsodescribedasADSF(AdiposeTissue-SpecificSecretoryFactor)orFIZZ3(FoundinInflammatoryZone3).Mouseresistinisexpressedasa114aminoacidprepeptide;itshydrofobicNterminal20aminoacidsignalpeptideiscleavedbeforeitssecretion.Mouseresistincirculatesinbloodasahomodimericproteinconsistingoftwo94aminoacidpolypeptides,whicharedisulfide-linkedviaCys26.Resistinmaybeanimportantlinkbetweenobesity.Mouseresistin,specificallyproducedandsecretedbyadipocyte,actsonskeletalmusclemyocytes,hepatocytesandadipocytesthemselvessothatitreducestheirsensitivity.Steppanetal.havesuggestedthatresistinsuppressedtheABIlitytostimulateglucoseuptake.Theyhavealsosuggestedthatresistinwaspresentatelevatedlevelsinbloodofobesemice,andwasdownregulatedbyfastingandbyantidiabeticdrugs.Wayetal.,ontheotherhand,havefoundthatresistinexpressionisseverelysuppressedinobesity.Otherstudieshaveshownthatmouseresistinincreasesduringthedifferentiationofadipocytes,butitalsoseemstoinhibitAdipogenesis.Incontrast,thehumanadipogenicdifferentiationislikelytobeassociatedwithadownregulationofresistingeneexpression.
